Privacy Policy
Last updated 27 June 2026
This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the HalalCook website and apps, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. We are committed to handling your data carefully and in line with UK data protection law.
1. Who we are
HalalCook is operated by Kayani Labs, a trading name of Kayani Group Ltd, a company registered in England & Wales (company no. 16415459). In this policy, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to Kayani Labs.
For any privacy question or to exercise your rights, contact us at privacy@halalcook.app. We are the “data controller” for the personal data described here.
2. The information we collect
Information you give us
- Waitlist sign-ups. Your email address, your platform preference (iOS, Android or both) and the time you signed up.
- Account details. If you create an account in the app, your email address — or, if you sign in with Apple or Google, the account identifier and email those services share with us.
- Content you create. Recipes you save or import, cookbooks, meal plans and shopping lists.
- Dietary & preference settings. Your halal preferences and any dietary settings you choose. Because these can reveal information about your religious beliefs, we treat them as special-category data — see section 4.
- Messages you send us, such as support or contact requests.
Information we collect automatically
- Technical & usage data needed to run the service securely and reliably — for example your IP address, device and app version, and basic logs of requests to our servers.
We do not use third-party advertising trackers, and we do not sell your personal data.
3. How and why we use your information
- To provide the service — to create and run your account, check ingredients, suggest halal swaps, and sync your saved recipes, cookbooks and meal plans across your devices. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.
- To keep you updated about the launch — if you join the waitlist, to email you about HalalCook’s release. Legal basis: your consent (you can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing).
- To keep the service secure and working — to prevent abuse, debug problems and maintain reliability. Legal basis: our legitimate interests in operating a safe, functional service.
- To meet legal obligations — where the law requires us to keep records or respond to lawful requests. Legal basis: legal obligation.
4. Religious and dietary data
Information about your halal and dietary preferences may indicate your religious beliefs, which is “special-category” data under UK GDPR and gets extra protection. We process it solely to deliver the core purpose of the app — helping you identify and adapt recipes to your requirements — and we rely on your explicit consent, given when you set those preferences. You can change or remove these settings, or delete your account, at any time.
5. Who we share it with
We share data only with service providers that help us run HalalCook, under contracts that require them to protect it:
- Supabase — hosts our database and handles account authentication and sync.
- Google — we forward waitlist sign-ups to a private Google Sheet; if you choose Google sign-in, Google authenticates you.
- Apple — if you choose “Sign in with Apple”.
- Netlify — hosts our website.
We may also disclose data where required by law, or to protect our rights, users or the public.
6. International transfers
Some of these providers process data outside the UK. Where that happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards — such as UK “adequacy” regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement / Standard Contractual Clauses — so your data keeps an equivalent level of protection.
7. How long we keep it
- Waitlist data — until launch and for a reasonable period after, or until you ask us to remove it or unsubscribe.
- Account & content data — for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete your associated data (subject to anything we must keep for legal reasons).
8. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- access a copy of your personal data;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased;
- restrict or object to certain processing;
- data portability;
- withdraw consent at any time (without affecting prior processing).
To exercise any of these, email privacy@halalcook.app. The app also lets you export your data and delete your account directly. If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, though we’d appreciate the chance to put things right first.
9. How we protect your data
We use encryption in transit (HTTPS), authenticated access, and row-level security so that each user can only reach their own data. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information against loss, misuse and unauthorised access.
10. Children
HalalCook isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we’ll remove it.
11. Cookies
Our website uses only the cookies strictly necessary to function and keep it secure. We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. If this changes, we’ll update this policy and ask for consent where required.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the “last updated” date above, and for significant changes we’ll provide a more prominent notice.
